As they waited on the porch for Dacious’s carriage to be brought around, Gemmah realized she had left her wrap in the cloakroom. Refusing his offer to fetch it for her, she hurried back inside.
In the breezeway, Miss Hempstead addressed Gemmah. “Oh, Miss Parker, there you are—I’m so glad I got to see you privately!”
“I’m glad I forgot my wrap then. Are you and your mother on your way home then, too?” Gemmah placed her wrap around her shoulders.
“Yes, we are. However, I meant to tell you that in two days’ time, I’ll be leaving for the continent and I wanted to thank you, Miss Parker.” She held her hands out for Gemmah to take. “I wouldn’t be going if it weren’t for you!”
She clasped hands with her friend. “You are very welcome. Is your mother excited about your trip?” she asked, as Valerie squeezed her hands in gratitude.
Valerie's gaze darted away from Gemmah’s. “I’m not quite sure I know how mother feels. I have not yet told her,” she said, raising her chin a notch.
Gemmah’s eyes went wide. “You have not told her? What is she going to think when you turn up missing? Oh, Miss Hempstead, I’m not so sure this is a good idea—”
“But, Miss Parker, she’d argue with me incessantly were she to have time to formulate a case! I will inform her via the post, once I reach my destination.”
Gemmah pulled Miss Hempstead into a corner in the entryway and looked up into Valerie’s eyes with an intensity that conveyed she meant business. “Miss Hempstead, I must insist that you tell your mother before you leave. Not only will it save her from terrible worry, but I’m quite certain it will put your mind at ease as well.”
Valerie stomped a slippered foot on the floor. “It will serve to spoil my fun, that’s for sure.”
“It won’t be fun if she sends the entirety of Scotland Yard after you. You must reconsider your course of action, Miss Hempstead!” Gemmah pleaded.
Utterly defeated, Valerie sighed. “Very well then, I’ll tell her that morning. But that’s all the time I can give her. I’m positive I’ll be in for a fight, even if I tell her five minutes before I depart.”
Relieved, Gemmah smiled. “Miss Hempstead, you are very wise to do what I’ve instructed, and besides,” she said as she drew her close and stared into her eyes for emphasis, “you and I both know that you have very good reasons why you should be taking this holiday. You are a woman, full-grown after all, and any argument your mother will come up with, no matter how passionately delivered, will not hold water. That is my promise to you.”
Valerie squared her shoulders in determination. “You are quite correct, Miss Parker. I shall endure her pesky opinions, because opinions are all they really are anyway.” She smiled conspiratorially at Gemmah.
“Just a moment.” Gemmah opened her reticule, and after a moment of fishing around in the handbag, pulled out a small, polished salmon and white-colored stone.
